EMINA

Cosecha 2005

13.5%

Region: D.O. Ribera del Duero

Variety:  Tempranillo

Notes: I visited the EMINA winery today and tried the above wine. For my first visit to a Ribera del Duero bodega I was a little disappointed as when we arrived we waited for a about 15 minutes before we were showed around what was virtually closed winery in terms of being Saturday and nobody was working (which would have been nice to be told).  Because of this we were showed around by what was a glorified receptionist (who doesn’t drink red wine??).

The wine tasting was ok but we were left alone for most of the time and lucky I was driving otherwise they wouldn’t have had much wine left. But we did get two 500ml bottles of the 2005 emina which helps save the experience.

But for 22 euros ( not just the money) I was disappointed that I wasn’t in contact with the actual wine makers and people who could explain their process and the wine more !!!

I tried a Emina Verdejo and Rosado which were pleasant without being anything great, I think they retail for around 5 – 6 euros.

But the Emina 2005 12 months in French and American oak was very nice, good structure, nice tannins. Has deep dark cherry and purple tones with good hint of spice and deep of flavour. The only down side to it really is the price as the Protos I tried couple of weeks ago is better for value and quality, and that it had a sharpness to it that could be due to being 8 years old.

Not sure whether it is the same in Spain as it is in Australia where its always more expensive at the bodegas than the shops…go figure!

Value for money:  7 / 10

Quality: 7.75 / 10

Price: 10 euros
